Background Information
The Petchey Academy is located in Shacklewell Lane, Dalston in the London Borough of Hackney and specialises in healthcare and medical sciences. Facility requirements included flexible classroom spaces, physical education facilities, ICT facilities, and ample space for secure storage.

Project objectives
Initial actions were to conduct a risk assessment of the proposed Academy site, and obtain early project involvement with Metropolitan Police Crime Prevention Design Advisor (CPDA). This stage then lead to a security workshop to present a security strategy to mitigate identified risks and allow client buy-in to the security proposals. As the project followed a design and build procurement route our security consultants were novated by the main contractor to complete the post tender design of the security systems. We were also responsible for witness testing and the project administration of the hand-over process to the Client.

Key successes

Upon completion of the project the Client was provided with a building which conformed to the requirements of ‘Secured by Design’ and included the provision of security systems developed during the initial stages of the project. These included a flexible access control system to classrooms and learning spaces which mitigated security risks associated with a convention key based security system including:

  • The design competitive procurement of implementation of a state of the art CCTV control suite at the heart of the gallery.
  • An upgrade of all existing security systems
  • The successful implemention of a sophisticated, and fully integrated security management systems.
  • Protection devices for artwork at the gallery

The access token specified for the access control system was integrated with third party applications including cashless catering to reduce risks associated with cash handling within the Academy.
