The early identification and understanding of threats against a business operation are critical to map out the eventual impact of risk.
To establish these threats, HS&S take advice from clients, insurers, security services, law enforcement agencies and stakeholders. HS&S then maps these client threats into sector specific general threats to build a complete picture. HS&S closely observe the client organisation and the business strategy, to determine the vulnerability of these threats.
Without this kind of careful consideration valuable resource could be wasted on unnecessary protection systems or worse, fail to provide adequate protection at critical points within the development.
The process at HS&S is based on both qualitative and quantative assessment methodologies. The effectiveness of these measures can be used to provide the business rationale for investing in a new system or upgrading an existing one based on measurable increase in performance associated with a decrease in risk to the business operation.
The aim is to establish if an existing system is still operating as intended, and if not to recommend suitable changes to mitigate the identified threats or design a complete system as part of a new build.
Generally there are three types of security related threats that are posed to new or existing developments, these are:
- Criminal acts perpetrated by outsiders such as terrorists, organised crime, extremists or hackers
- Criminal or disruptive acts perpetrated by insiders
- Natural hazards that may affect the ability of the development to operate – i.e. adverse weather
